Affiliate Policy & Disclosure

Last Updated: March 2026

Full Transparency: This blog contains affiliate links. When you purchase through these links, I receive a small commission. This doesn't cost you anything extra, but it helps me maintain this blog and fund my very long extension cord. I only recommend products I actually believe in. If I think something is garbage, I'll tell you it's garbage, affiliate links be damned.

What Are Affiliate Links?

An affiliate link is a special URL that tracks whether you clicked through from this blog to make a purchase. If you do, the company gives me a small percentage of the sale as a commission. It's basically the internet's way of saying "thanks for the recommendation," except with money instead of actual gratitude.

I'm not getting rich off this. I'm getting enough to justify maintaining a blog via a borrowed WiFi signal. The margins are small and the effort is significant, but it works.

Which Products Have Affiliate Links?

I recommend products and services that I've actually used or thoroughly researched. These might include:

  • Seeds and gardening supplies

  • Water collection systems and rain barrels

  • Solar panels and renewable energy equipment

  • Off-grid living tools and resources

  • Books about homesteading and self-sufficiency

  • Whatever else I think will help you live off the grid

Not every product mentioned on this blog has an affiliate link. Some things I just recommend because they're good. Some things I recommend with affiliate links because they're good AND I've partnered with the company. I'll be clear about which is which.

How to Know If There's an Affiliate Link

I always disclose when a link is an affiliate link. Look for labels like:

  • "(affiliate link)"

  • "This is an affiliate link"

  • "I earn a commission if you purchase through this link"

I won't hide affiliate links. That's not how this works. You deserve to know when I have a financial incentive to recommend something. And honestly, I've been around for 600 years—my reputation is more valuable than a few commissions.

Important: Just because something has an affiliate link doesn't mean I'm recommending it to make money. I'm recommending it because I think it's good. The affiliate relationship is just a bonus. If I stopped making money from affiliate links tomorrow, my recommendations wouldn't change. The products would still be good.

My Affiliate Partners

I work with several affiliate programs that align with off-grid living:

  • Amazon Associates (for gardening tools, books, and various supplies)

  • Specific solar and renewable energy companies

  • Homesteading and off-grid product retailers

  • Other legitimate companies in the off-grid space

These are all real companies with real products. I've vetted them. I wouldn't send you to garbage just for a commission.

How Much Do I Make?

Not much, honestly. Most affiliate programs pay between 3-10% commission on sales. Some are higher for specific products. Let's say someone buys a $100 rain barrel through my link—I might make $5-10. It adds up over time if enough people click through, but I'm not here to get rich.

I'm here to help you live off the grid. The affiliate income is just the internet's way of saying I can keep doing this without having to sell your data to shadowy corporations.

Also, for the record: I don't get paid by the government or any conspiracy groups. I'm not secretly pushing specific products because of some deal. I'm literally just a cryptid who thinks you should buy good stuff and doesn't mind getting a small commission for pointing you toward it. That's the conspiracy here. The pettiest, most honest conspiracy ever.

Can You Trust My Recommendations?

Yes. Here's why:

  • I've been alive for 600 years. Honesty is kind of important when you want to maintain your reputation for that long.

  • I only recommend products I actually use or believe in.

  • If a product is bad, I'll tell you it's bad, affiliate link or not.

  • My reputation as a credible source is worth way more than any individual commission.

  • I genuinely want you to succeed at off-grid living. Recommending garbage doesn't help with that.

What About Sponsored Content?

If I ever write a full sponsored post (like a company paying me to write about their specific product), I'll disclose it clearly at the top of the post. You'll know it's different from my regular recommendations.

Spoiler alert: I probably won't do much of that because maintaining editorial independence is important to me. I'd rather have fewer dollars and more credibility.

FTC Compliance

This blog complies with the Federal Trade Commission's guidelines about affiliate marketing disclosure. If you're reading this and you're the FTC, hi. I'm trying. Disclosure is important. I get it. Here's my disclosure.

Contact About Affiliate Partnerships

If you represent a company that makes off-grid products and want to discuss an affiliate partnership, you can find me in the woods. Seriously. I maintain this blog via a very long extension cord, but I do occasionally check email. Send partnership inquiries through the contact form (when I eventually set one up).

I'm interested in partnerships that align with off-grid living and genuine self-sufficiency. No crypto schemes, no MLMs, no garbage. Quality products only.

Also, if you're trying to get me to sell something that's bad for off-grid living or environmentally destructive, don't bother. I've watched humanity make bad environmental decisions for 600 years. I'm not going to help you make more just because you offered me money.

Changes to This Policy

As this blog grows and I potentially add new types of affiliate partnerships, I'll update this policy. Check back occasionally if you're paranoid about this stuff (which is fair—the internet is full of shady affiliate marketing).
